Indian Music Director Wajid Khan Of Sajid-Wajid Fame Dies Of Coronavirus At 42

Indian music director Wajid Khan, part of famous duo Sajid-Wajid, dies of the coronavirus complications leading to kidney issues at a hospital in Mumbai early on Monday, PTI reported. He was 42 years old.

A source close to the family revealed to news agency PTI that Khan was buried around 1 PM local time, today. Because of the coronavirus-induced lockdown in Mumbai, only 20 people were allowed for the funeral with police security and barricades. “Only close family, including brother Sajid and friends from the industry were present,” the sources said.

His brother Sajid confirmed to the news agency that the musician had tested positive for COVID-1, and died of cardiac arrest.

In an interaction with PTI, music composer Salim Merchant also revealed that the singer-composer was admitted in Chembur’s Surana Hospital a few days ago where his condition deteriorated.

“He had multiple issues. He had a kidney issue and had a transplant a while ago. But recently he got to know about kidney infection… He was on the ventilator for the last four days, after his situation started getting worse. Kidney infection was the beginning and then he got critical,” Salim said in his statement to PTI.

The Sajid-Wajid duo made their Bollywood debut with actor Salman Khan’s 1998 movie Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya, and went on to compose music for Salman Khan’s films, such as Garv, Tere Naam, Tumko Na Bhool Payenge, Partner and the Dabangg franchise, according to PTI.

Wajid Khan also did playback singing for Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Some of his well known tracks were “Mera He Jalwa”, “Fevicol Se” and “Chinta Tha Chita Chita”. The composer also scored the theme song for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League, “Dhoom Dhoom Dhoom Dhadaka”.

Several celebrities took to social media platforms to express their grief and to offer condolences to the bereaved family.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas posted a tweet expressing her disbelief over the sad demise of the noted composer.

“Terrible news. The one thing I will always remember is Wajid bhai’s laugh. Always smiling. Gone too soon. My condolences to his family and everyone grieving. Rest in peace my friend. You are in my thoughts and prayers.”Noted playback singer, Sonu Nigam also posted a message on Facebook, along with a photo with the composer duo, expressing his grief at the sudden passing away of the noted composer.

Actor Varun Dhawan, also took to Twitter to express his shock at the sudden demise, his tweet read, “Shocked hearing this news Wajid Khan bhai was extremely close to me and my family. He was one of the most positive people to be around. We will miss u Wajid bhai thank u for the music.”

Composer, Singer Salim Merchant also took to Twitter and said, “Devastated with the news of the passing away of my brother Wajid of Sajid -Wajid fame. May Allah give strength to the family. Safe travels bro Wajid Khan you’ve gone too soon. It’s a huge loss to our fraternity. I’m shockedbroken. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.”

The Sajid-Wajid duo had last worked together on Salman Khan’s song titled ‘Bhai Bhai’, which was released on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, amid the COVID-19 induced lockdown. (ANI)
