Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA5) Available Free Today On The Epic Games Store

Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5 ( GTA5 ) will be available free today Thursday morning on the Epic Games Store. Free games are available weekly on the platform; last week it was an indie game called Death Coming. The Windows PC version of GTA 5 will be the upcoming week’s game, unlocked at 11 a.m. EDT as a free download until May 21, according to Epic Games.

The Epic Games Store is having loading issues right now, perhaps due to a large number of people heading to the site to claim today’s free game.

Epic said in a tweet that “We are currently experiencing high traffic on the Epic Games Store. We are aware that users may be encountering slow loading times, 500 errors, or launcher crashing at this time and we are actively working to scale. We’ll provide an update as soon as we can.”

It looks like the Epic Games Store’s next free game will be a big one-according to a deleted tweet from Epic, Grand Theft Auto V is the next free game that’ll be available to claim starting at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET today (May 14). As always, Epic Store users will have one week to claim the game, with a new freebie replacing it next Thursday. Plus, you still have about an hour to claim this week’s free game, Death Coming.

To score GTA 5 on PC for free, you’ll have to create an Epic Games account and download the Epic Games Store launcher from the Epic Games website.

Once you’re in the launcher, simply scroll to the ‘Free Games’ area of the store after 11am ET today and you should be able to get GTA 5 for free — at least until May 21.

If you’re wondering about the system requirements, it’s likely going to be the same as the Steam version of the game, so you’ll need at least an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600, 4GB of RAM, an Nvidia 9800GT or AMD 4870 GPU and 72GB of storage. However, the recommended specs are a Core i5 CPU, a GTX 660 GPU and 8GB of RAM.

While the story mode of GTA 5 will be completely free and playable, keep in mind that GTA Online might be a little hard to break into. This is a friendly reminder that you either have to spend hundreds of dollars to have fun in GTA Online or religiously commit yourself to playing it every day and offer up your firstborn child to the gods to actually progress. And don’t even get me started about the loading screens. Have fun!
